A broadly spreading, deciduous, small tree (10-15m high) with large lobed leaves giving a subtropical appearance. New growth purplish. It is rare in NZ and well worth growing for those who like something different. It grows in mixed forests at altitudes of 1800-3700 meters in Bhutan, northern India, Myanmar, Nepal, Vietnam and southern China.
